Trichotillomania (TTM) is a largely unconscious self-harming behavior characterized by hair plucking. While sufferers may pull hair from any part of the body, TTM usually involves pulling hair from the scalp, eyelashes and eyebrows. Most often an anxiety response, the behavior also causes shame and embarrassment for the sufferer because the effects of the impulsive behavior are visible. The resulting humiliation can lead to low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Until now, the only remedies have been therapy, particularly Cognitive Behavior Therapy, provided by a psychologist or other clinician and drug therapy, solutions that are expensive and/or time-consuming.
